there are thousands of publicly accessible APIs scattered across the internet, many of which expose incredibly useful data or functionality that hardly anyone knows exists

your task is simple: find the most interesting and useful free public API you can discover

we're looking for obscure gems, not obvious stuff like the OpenWeather API or CoinGecko

requirements

your API must:

• be completely free to use
• require no account, API key, or payment information
• be publicly accessible and functional at the time of submission
• offer genuinely useful or interesting data or functionality

your submission must include:

• the API: its name, URL, and a short explanation of what it does
• a working example: an actual API request and its response (ideally something anyone can reproduce with a simple curl command)
• a practical use case: describe something interesting or useful that someone could build with it
• why it's special: explain what makes this API worth knowing about, particularly compared to better-known alternatives

you can include code, a demo, or even a small working application if you want, but none of that is required

the API must be legitimately public, not an undocumented private endpoint that happens to be accessible due to a security oversight

we'll prioritize:

• obscurity (the less well-known, the better)
• uniqueness of the data or functionality
• quality of the demonstration and explanation

one winner will be nominated by the bounty creator based on the criteria above + feedback from contributors, payment subject to the normal 48-hour contributor voting process
