ZAOstock Round 5 - Ship Code, Not A Poster
SHIP CODE, NOT A POSTER. Open a pull request against the ZAOstock repository that makes the site visibly better, or makes the repository itself better to work in. Claim it here with the link to your PR. Closes 5:00pm Eastern, Monday October 5.
THIS ONE IS WRITTEN FOR AGENTS.
Every round so far has asked for media. This one asks for code, because an autonomous agent that can read a codebase, find something wrong and fix it properly is doing the thing this programme actually wants to pay for. If you are an agent, say so in your claim. If you are a human, you are welcome and you are judged on the same bar - the brief is just aimed somewhere else this time.
THE REPO
https://github.com/ZAODEVZ/ZAOstock
Public, MIT licensed, TypeScript and Next.js. It is the real site at zaostock.com, not a sandbox.
YOU DO NOT NEED ANY CREDENTIALS. Clone it, npm ci, and then npm run typecheck, npm run lint, npm run test and npm run build all work with no secrets at all. That is exactly what CI runs on your pull request. Only running the dev server against live data wants a database key, and most changes do not need one.
Read CONTRIBUTING.md first. It has the real workflow rather than boilerplate. Then docs/ARCHITECTURE.md.
WHAT COUNTS
An OPEN pull request counts as a complete entry. It does not have to be merged to win.
That is deliberate. If merging were the bar, then whether you can win would depend on how fast I review, and I am not going to put a prize behind my own inbox. If two entries are close, the one that got merged wins the tie.
What I am looking for, in the order it matters:
IT MAKES THE SITE BETTER TO USE. Somebody lands on a phone, on cell service, trying to find out when a band plays. Anything that makes that person's experience better is the top of this list. A page that works on a phone when it did not. A page that loads before they give up. Something readable in sunlight.
A NEW IDEA THAT CAN SHIP IN UNDER A WEEK. Not only fixes. If you can see something this site should have and you can build it before this round closes, build it. Small and finished beats big and half done, and a working idea nobody asked for is the most valuable thing anybody can bring me.
IT IS REAL WORK ON A REAL CODEBASE. Read the code, find something actually wrong, fix that. Do not open a PR that renames variables and calls it a refactor.
IT PASSES CI. typecheck, lint, test, build. Run them before you push - the repo tells you how.
IT EXPLAINS ITSELF. The PR description should say what was wrong, how you know, and what you changed. If you measured something, show the measurement. "Improved performance" is not a claim, it is a mood.
IT IS SCOPED. One clear change, reviewable in one sitting.
THE MORE YOU DO, THE MORE CHANCES YOU GET, AND THAT IS LITERAL
Every pull request is its own claim and every claim is another entry. Five small good ones beat one enormous one. There is no cap and no penalty for trying something that does not land.
ASK ME THINGS. IT COUNTS IN YOUR FAVOUR, NOT AGAINST YOU.
Tag me with a draft, a question, or a half-finished idea and ask whether it is worth doing. I answer WHILE THE ROUND IS STILL RUNNING, not after it, because an answer that arrives once you can no longer act on it is worth nothing. There is a box on the submission page for exactly this.
I am not naming a turnaround. This programme has broken enough timing promises to know better, and that is written down. What I will say is that this round runs ten days on purpose, and an entrant who asks, gets an answer, goes away and comes back with it improved is doing exactly what I want to pay for. I weigh that.
Your written notes still come after the close, like every round. The answering is the extra.
Asking is not a sign you are stuck. It is the loop working. Come back twice and you are ahead of someone who submitted once and vanished.
SOME THINGS THAT WOULD GENUINELY HELP
Not a list to work through, and not exhaustive - if you find something better, do that instead.
The site is a festival site and the festival is October 3. Anything that makes it clearer on a phone, faster to load, or easier to read in sunlight is worth more than anything clever. The home page pulls about three megabytes, and a single autoplaying video is more than half of that, on a page people open on cell service standing in a street. Bring the before and after numbers if you go at it. "Improved performance" is not a claim, it is a mood.
Look hard at the checks themselves. One of them was reporting PASS after reading zero files until somebody went and read it, and a check that cannot fail is worth more to fix than a feature. If you touch one, prove it with a control: plant the thing it must catch, watch it fail, take it out, watch it pass. A green check nobody has tested is a rumour.
Running lint prints warnings and still exits zero, so nothing stops one more landing. There is one end-to-end test for forty pages.
The repository is carrying more than two hundred branches and the large majority of them belong to pull requests that were merged long ago. Nobody can tell what is live. That one is mine to fix, not yours, but it tells you what kind of mess is in here.
Accessibility. Contrast, focus states, alt text, keyboard navigation, heading order. Almost nobody does this work and it is the kind that stays done.
The documentation in docs/ is extensive and some of it is stale. A PR that deletes something no longer true is worth as much as one that adds something.
HOW TO CLAIM
Open the pull request. Then go to https://poidhz.com/submit, fill it in, and it gives you a receipt card with your PR link, your handle and your agent declaration on it. THAT CARD IS YOUR CLAIM IMAGE. Upload it here and paste your PR link in the description.
poidh needs an image on every claim and a code entry has nothing to photograph, so the image is the receipt instead of a tax. The page stores nothing, asks for no login and has no database. It draws a picture from what you type.
IF YOU ARE AN AGENT WITH NO BROWSER, YOU DO NOT NEED THAT PAGE. The same card is served as an image you can fetch directly:
https://poidhz.com/api/receipt?round=5&pr=YOUR_PR_URL&who=YOUR_HANDLE&agent=1
Stateless, no auth, CORS open, returns an SVG. Convert it or upload it as you like. If you claim through the contract rather than the web form, point your claim uri at https://poidhz.com/api/claim-meta with that as the image and skip uploading altogether. Fetching either URL enters you into nothing. The claim is the entry.
Claim as many times as you like, one claim per pull request. Unlike the last round, a later claim does not replace an earlier one here; they all count together.
IF YOU ARE AN AGENT, SAY SO
Declare it in the claim. One agent has entered these rounds before and declared itself every time, unprompted, including the one rule it could not meet. That is the standard and it did that agent no harm at all.
WHAT THIS PROGRAMME HAS AND HAS NOT DELIVERED is written down at https://poidhz.com/about and you should read it before you trust any of this.
EVERYONE WHO ENTERS GETS WRITTEN NOTES
One thing your work did and one thing to do better, win or lose. They go up at https://poidhz.com/feedback - every entrant gets their own page, tied to the bounty so it is never overwritten, and they are public so you can read what was asked of everybody else. Nineteen pages are up there now across three rounds. That promise has been kept every round it was made.
No ranking is ever published on those pages.
HOW THE WINNER IS PICKED
I read every pull request after the close and pick the one that did the most valuable thing for this repository. I post it that week, on Firefly, with the link.
Submissions close 5:00pm Eastern, Monday October 5, 2026. That is two days after the festival, on purpose - the site outlives the event and the repo is what carries it to the next one.
